TMP engages in strategic discussions with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on counterfeiting trends

We are pleased to announce that on August 8, 2024, our partners—Ms. Suthasinee Sutthavas, Head of Enforcement; Mr. Pawat Varapirom; Mr. Munif Chaipanya; and Ms. Adele Marchal—had the distinct honor of meeting with key authorities from the Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime, Department of Special Investigation (DSI). The meeting was attended by Pol. Capt. Polsan Therdsanguan, Director of the Intellectual Property Litigation Bureau, as well as seven other directors and deputy directors.
The Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime holds a crucial role in preventing, investigating, and prosecuting criminal offenses that require special investigation under the Special Case Investigation Act, B.E. 2547 (2004). Their work is particularly focused on cases arising under four key laws: the Trademark Act, B.E. 2534 (1991), the Copyright Act, B.E. 2537 (1994), the Patent Act, B.E. 2522 (1979), and the Protection of Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits Act, B.E. 2543 (2000).

Our discussions during the meeting centered on the latest trends in counterfeiting and effective strategies to address intellectual property challenges within the Kingdom of Thailand. Of particular interest were recent cases involving counterfeit luxury brands, cosmetics, food supplements, and pharmaceutical products. It was noted that numerous cases initiated by government officers have faced challenges due to insufficient support from brand owners. The lack of active involvement from brand owners has created obstacles and delayed judicial procedures. The DSI emphasized the need for increased cooperation, especially in cases where raids and arrests have already been conducted.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the directors and deputy directors of the Bureau of Intellectual Property Crime for their time and invaluable insights. We look forward to continuing this important collaboration and working together to effectively combat counterfeiting.
